Favorite Photography Sites (titles are links)
Steves Digicams
Nice site, with a fun monthly photo contest (sweet prizes). It's best feature is it's VERY helpful, well staffed, and friendly. forum (click here)
DPReview
Very thorough reviews; this is where I go for them. The forums are decent, but not half as nice as Steve's
Cameralabs.com
Nice video reviews.
Ken Rockwell
A photographer with a lot to say. He has a lot of good stuff, but is also often over opinionated, so take it all with a grain of salt. His "7 levels of photography" is fantastic. Nice and personal though
Alpha Tracks
One of the only Sony blogs out there. Good for news and reviews.

Best (FREE) Photo Software
Google Picasa:
Great for basic stuff (contrast, cropping); the best for orginizinng. The controls are very intuitive and fun.
Irfanview:
Intermediate; good for fine tuning rotations, colors, and crops. Controls arent too hard, there's just a lot it can do.
Paint.net:
Advanced, with easy controls, with lots of features, but it doesn't have some that are dear to me, like an airbrush and feathering the edge of a crop. But otherwise much easier than GIMP.
GIMP:
Very advanced; a free equivalent of Photoshop. Hard to master the controls, but it can do pretty much anything. I use this for only the most complicated stuff though, since it isn't half as fast or easy as Picasa.
Microsoft ICE:
Great for stitching panoramas.
